Super Heroes Unite!!!

Summer is heating up and so are the activities in Athens! This week, we’d like to remind everyone of the 1st Annual Athens Comic-Con to be held this coming Saturday, July 13th at The Texan - A Landmark Venue. Cosplayers from around the state will converge in full costume and vendors will be on hand as well. Let’s make this a tremendous event for years to come!!!


Here’s a look at local activities planned for week of July 7 – 13, 2019:


July 08 - 11: TVCC – Athens Driver’s Ed Course

Trinity Valley Community College

Driving time and simulator may be scheduled outside class times on Fridays and Saturdays.


July 08- 12: YES! Company Summer Theater Camp

Henderson County Performing Arts Center

Ages - 10-15 Cost - $125* ($25 discount for each additional sibling)

Led by Candy Williams, theatre teacher at Athens Preparatory Academy. Students will learn a collection of monologues and small duet scenes along with a short musical number all in the format of a professional audition. Students should bring a sack lunch. Join us for our free, annual Vacation Bible School July 8th-11th from 5:30PM-7:30PM. We will have Bible stories, out of this world science experiments, games, and a snack supper! July 08: Athens City Council Meeting

The Athens City Council meets in Regular Session on the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the City Hall Annex, 501 N. Pinkerton St., Athens, Texas (*). The agenda for each meeting will be posted in advance at www.athenstx.gov. Contact the City Council by emailing council@athenstx.gov. (*) Location of meeting may vary. It is suggested that the location be confirmed through the City of Athens website or Facebook page prior to attending.

July 08: Athens Order of the Eastern Star #177 - Monthly Business Meeting

Monthly business meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star, open to members from any other Lodge. Dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. (donations accepted) and meeting begins at 7:30


July 09: Baby Story Time

Join Ms. Lynn for basic sign language, songs, fine motor skills board books, finger puppet plays, and social interaction.

NOTE: Due to the popularity of this activity, there are now two sessions offered - one at 10:30 a.m. and another at 11:30 a.m. Each class is approximately 30 minutes in length.

Athens Kiwanis is a group of dedicated hard working individuals who raise funds to support youth projects and programs in Athens.


July 09: Money Camp

Almost every child grows up with a piggy bank and is used to depositing coins into it for future spending. However, can this alone help your children the value of money and how to properly manage it? Join with us each Tuesday in July as we navigate the world of finance. Presented by Gateway to American Opportunities (a regional literacy initiative in partnership with A Circle of Ten, Inc.) Children ages 5 - 11 will learn good saving habits, and will learn how to look for value in their future purchases.


July 09: Blood Drive (Recurring)

Help to ensure that blood is available to those patients who need it most. Stop by the Carter Bloodcare Blood Mobile every other Tuesday at the Walmart Supercenter in Athens to make your regular donation!!


July 09: Canning Series

East Texas Arboretum

We will have a "Canning Series" going on July 9th, 16th and 23rd here at the Arboretum. If you want to feel self-sufficient, nostalgic and have a sense of self- gratification this is for you! There will be groups of 4, so bring 3 friends with you. There is a limit of 16 participants per class. You will each go home with your canned creation. It will be another fun evening for the ladies! July 09: Yoga with Miranda Perry

Athens Fitness Center Multipurpose Room (old Armory Bldg.)

Learn foundation yoga poses and beginners breathing in this 60 minute yoga flow class that will include both standing poses and seated on the mat, sun salutations, and relaxation. Perfect for beginners or intermediate levels.


July 09: Athens Masonic Lodge #165 – Weekly Meeting

The Athens Masonic Lodge meets every Tuesday evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a monthly business meeting occurring on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.


July 09: Square Dance Lessons

For just $4.00/lesson, you can learn to Square Dance! Learn how to square dance then join in the fun at all Pea Pickers Square Dance nights. PLEASE NOTE: This schedule is subject to change! July 10: Preschool Story Time

Ages 2 to Pre-K are invited to join Ms. Bobbie's class for an interactive storytime and a craft as we explore books as works of art while incorporating early literacy development skills. Classes are weekly on Thursday and Friday unless otherwise announced.


July 10: Manes & Tales

Black Beauty Ranch

A unique program designed to bring children and rescue horses together. The Library and the Doris Day Equine Center (located at Black Beauty Ranch) have teamed up together for children to read to horses.

July 10: Athens Chamber of Commerce Monthly Membership Luncheon

Athens Country Club

Join the members of the Athens Chamber of Commerce for their monthly membership luncheon and meeting. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at noon. Sponsored monthly by local businesses, during the luncheon awards will be presented for Large Business of the Month, Small Business of the Month, and Community Connection. During the school year, a Teacher of the Month will also be honored.


July 10: Weekly Faith Family Feast

Big stuff starts back up this Wednesday Night at 6pm. Join us for a family style dinner then pick which small group Bible study you want to get in on from 6:30-7:30pm. Verse by Verse Bible study, The Daniel Plan or Financial Peace. There’s also a group for every age from Babies to College age! You are not gonna want to miss it! Suggested donation of $3/person with no more than $10/family.


July 11: Howdy Heroes

Henderson County Judicial Complex

We are humbled and honored to have our local Heroes of the community of Athens and the surrounding area. We will be set up at the Judicial Complex (across the street from the library) this Thursday to bring joy to the faces of our children. Come shake their hand, and check out their vehicles this Thursday 10:00 AM to 12 PM!! Kona Ice and The Pork Commander will be there to serve up tasty treats!


July 11: Henderson County Community Coalition Partnership – Monthly Meeting

The community is encouraged to participate in this monthly meeting to discuss strategies to reduce substance abuse among the young people of Henderson County.

3 P’s in a Vine

Come join us for Bring Your Own Meat (BYOM) Night at 3 P's in a Vine. All you have to do is call to reserve your table with a $10 deposit per person (which is refunded), bring your own meat and drink wine July 13th. We will provide the seasonings, grills, salad, baked potatoes and all the fixings. You could not ask for a better date night, celebration dinner, friend or family gathering.
